McDonald's faces legal battle over claims about famous McRib

    McDonald's has strongly pushed back.

    McDonald's McRib

McDonald's could be heading for a legal showdown over one of its most famous menu items.

The fast-food giant has been hit with a federal class-action lawsuit centered on the long-running McRib sandwich.

For decades, the McRib has developed a cult following thanks to its limited-time appearances and loyal fan base.

The sandwich features a boneless pork patty topped with barbecue sauce, onions, and pickles on a homestyle bun.

Although it first disappeared from menus in the mid-1980s following disappointing sales, it later returned and became a recurring favorite.

Why is McDonald's being sued over the McRib?

The lawsuit was filed in Chicago's US District Court on December 23, 2025.

Four plaintiffs from California, New York, Illinois, and Washington, DC claim McDonald's misled consumers through the sandwich's branding and advertising.

According to the filing, the plaintiffs argue the McRib name creates the impression that the sandwich contains pork rib meat. The lawsuit described the product's name as a "deliberate sleight of hand".

"By including the word 'Rib' in the name of the sandwich, McDonald's knowingly markets the sandwich in a way that deceives reasonable consumers, who reasonably (but mistakenly) believe that a product named the 'McRib' will include at least some meaningful quantity of actual pork rib meat, which commands a premium price on the market," the lawsuit read.

It further alleged: "McDonald's does this despite knowing that the sandwich in fact does not contain any meaningful quantity of actual pork rib meat — indeed, none at all."

Additionally, the filing claims some customers would not have purchased the sandwich if they had known the details outlined in the lawsuit.

The plaintiffs are seeking compensation and an order preventing what they describe as deceptive marketing practices.

    How has McDonald's responded?

McDonald's has strongly pushed back against the allegations. The company said the lawsuit misrepresents the facts and contains several inaccuracies.

"Food quality and safety are at the heart of everything we do – that's why we're committed to using real, quality ingredients across our entire menu," a spokesperson said.

"Our fan-favourite McRib sandwich is made with 100 percent pork sourced from farmers and suppliers across the U.S. We've always been transparent about our ingredients so guests can make the right choice for them."

McDonald's also rejected claims that pork hearts, tripe, or scalded stomach are used in the product. The company maintains the McRib is made from 100 percent seasoned boneless pork.
